Dr. Allen Verhey is a professor of ethics at Duke Divinity School and author of Reading the Bible in the Strange World of Medicine. His presentation for Duke Divinity School’s Center for Care at the End of Life explores Christian arguments both for and against continuation of the patients life. I found his article interesting particularly because he provides compelling theological support for Christians on each side of the issue.

Questions:
- Describe the different philosophies and/or foundations on which each position is based.
- Were you previously drawn to any particular position?
- How do we resolve the fact that the church supports both of these positions, with the need of the church to provide guidance for this issue?
- Do you know of other positions within the Church which have legitimate arguments both for and against, and how have you responded?
